Classic Female Blues
Women began recording the blues in the 1920s. Led by singers like Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, they produced a string of early hits that were markedly sassy and confident in tone. Later artists like Billie Holiday toned down the sass a bit, but sang just as honestly about their relationships and lives.
