Astor Piazzolla y su quinteto
Astor Piazolla was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina on March 11, 1921, but partially grew up in New York where he was exposed to that cities’ vibrant jazz scene. Upon returning to Argentina in 1936 Piazolla moved to Buenos Aires to seek work as a tango musician. He was to become one of the most influential tango composers, a true modernizer of his genre, and formed his first quintet in 1960. While often using poems of Latin American writer as inspiration for his music, he was also influenced by the North American jazz scene that he, in turn, inspired as well. Piazolla died in 1992.
