Ray Barretto
Born April 29, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, Ray Barretto was one of the century's dominant percussion players. Though descending from Latin origins, he started his musical journey in jazz, mastering first swing and later Latin grooves. While being in demand as a studio musician playing for Cannonball Adderley, Kenny Burrell, Lou Donaldson, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard and Wes Montgomery among others, he was starting to achieve the status of a unique frontman, leading some of the more interesting progressive Latin jazz bands during his career.
