The American blues vocalist Lucille Bogan was born on April 1, 1897 in Mississippi, but grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. As an artist she often used the name Bessie Jackson. Together with her accompanist Walter Roland Bogan she recorded numerous songs, among them “Shave ‘Em Dry”, “Tricks Ain’t Walkin’ No More” and “Mr. Screw Worm In Trouble”. Bogan appeared in the rowdy part of the area, where she was popular not only because of her vocal talents but also because of her humorous lyrics about sex, body parts and prostitution. Most recorded versions of her songs featured watered-down lyrics.
