Born Alonzo Johnson on February 8, 1899 in New Orleans, jazz guitarist Lonnie Johnson became one of the most prolific blues players of his generation, pushing the genre forward with his endless invention, skill and sense of melody. Signing to OKeh Records in 1925 he recorded over 130 sessions between 1925 and 1932, while also being a sideman for Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five and Duke Ellington’s orchestra. In the late 50’s he enjoyed his biggest hits “Tomorrow Night” (later covered by Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis) and “So Tired”. He died on June 16, 1970 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
