Miguel Aceves Mejia claims to have discovered the young Jimenez in a restaurant in Santa Maria de Rivera, Mexico.
Though Jimenez was a musical genius, he had no formal training and sang all his songs to Mejia from memory.
Jimenez died of hepatitis in 1973. Considering that, he still casts a long shadow over Mexican music.
