Hailing from Seymour, Ind., John Mellencamp is an outspoken advocate for the American farmer -- a pop rock populist.
John Mellencamp's debut album, "Chestnut Street Incident," was released in 1976 under the name Johnny Cougar.
In 1985, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Willie Nelson organized Farm Aid.
In 1994, John Mellencamp suffered a heart attack, and had to cancel plans for a world-wide tour.
In 1992, Mellencamp directed and starred in the movie "Falling From Grace."
