Jimmy Smith

The dazzling architect of modern bop'n'blues fueled organ, Smith scored hit singles deep into the rock era.
Smith was among the first jazz dudes to experiment with organs. There wasn't even a term for what he was doing at the time.
It can be said that his music, first appearing primarily on jukeboxes, eventually became known as "funk."
Smith began playing the Hammond B-3, his signature instrument, in 1951.
Smith died on February 8, 2005. He was eighty years old.
