Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley

This hard bopping alto sax star was one of the biggest names in jazz during the soul-infused 1960s.
Adderly got funkier and funkier and kept his star polished during the R&B-mad 1960s and '70s.
Cannonball was the wilder "star" but his brother Nat, a cornetist, was also a fine musician and the superior composer.
Miles Davis pitched Adderly against the more progressive sax style of John Coltrane on his classic Kind of Blue.
The high living Adderly died of a stroke a couple years shy of his fiftieth birthday.
