Big Joe Williams

With his G-tuned nine-string guitar, Big Joe Williams knocked out Delta-style blues for over 60 years, starting by playing store porches, work camps and alleys along the Mississippi and up to Chicago to become a major recording artist. Although the trademark of Delta blues is an African-derived percussive use of the guitar, beating on the box and snapping the strings, Big Joe took the technique to extremes, even attaching clanging objects to his amps when he played electric. He died in 1982, but many of his sessions have been released on discs like "The Sonet Blues Story" from 2005.
